I love this book. I would recommend it to anyone to use with their student right before Prealgebra. It sets up great algebraic thinking without getting bogged down in equations right away. I love word problems to teach math. I was an engineer for 10 years, and I think word problems prepare a student for real work better than dry equations. Any engineering problem can be stated as a word problem. In reading the word problem, the student has to interpret what it means and then solve the problem, which is much more like how math would be used by engineers.
My son is in 7th grade and currently taking both Algebra I and Geometry (a combined class) and Trigonometry. He is taking Trigonometry because he ASKED to, and we again found a program that has a lot of word problems, which again I find to be much more in alignment with how the math is used in the real world. He has an incredible sense of how numbers work, tearing through advanced problems, and while some of it is his natural talent and drive, I strongly credit the work of Denise Gaskins for helping him unleash his talent. Her math games and word problems have been part of our home school for 5+ years now.
